WEBHMS Vala The Vala was a cargo ship launched in 1894 and owned previously by J. T. Salvesen of Grangemouth. She had a busy time in the months preceding the 20th August. Between December 1916 and July 1917 she had been involved in fights with five different U-Boats, so presumably her appearance was reasonably well-known.

The action occurred well away from land — the location I have in my notes is 120 miles SW of the Scillies, 48°37'N, 9°28'W. It was pretty typical for U-boats to interview survivors after they sank a ship sailing independently and then simply continue on.
