WEBSep 20, 2017. #1. I currently use AT&T service but I'd like to buy an unlocked sim-free iPhone X when it comes out. Unfortunately that option doesn't seem to be available like it is on the iPhone 8. My confusion is that when I select AT&T and then select the pay in full option, I can see it says "unlocked with AT&T sim" on the Apple website.

But, I'm on AT&T.. So, I'm stuck with the GSM version, and while it's unlocked, I can't use any CDMA networks in the future without replacing the phone.

I always buy unlocked but any locked phone, in the US, will be unlocked by the carrier when the terms of the contract are met.. or in the case of Verizon, 60 days after you buy it, contract or not. Factory unlocked and carrier unlocked are exactly the same.

You cannot use that device on another network (for example Verizon) unless you get an unlock code from AT&T and unlock the device. AT&T will only do this when the phone is fully paid off.
