WEB970. SoCal. Sep 15, 2017. #1. Really pretty bummed out that I can't order a SIM Free edition of the iPhone X when it launches in October. I pay full price, and just want a world-capable phone. But, I'm on AT&T.. So, I'm stuck with the GSM version, and while it's unlocked, I can't use any CDMA networks in the future without replacing the phone.

I always buy unlocked but any locked phone, in the US, will be unlocked by the carrier when the terms of the contract are met.. or in the case of Verizon, 60 days after you buy it, contract or not. Factory unlocked and carrier unlocked are exactly the same.

Unfortunately that option doesn't seem to be available like it is on the iPhone 8. My confusion is that when I select AT&T and then select the pay in full option, I can see it says "unlocked with AT&T sim" on the Apple website.

Prepaid carriers in the U.S. don't have contracts. Anybody can buy an iPhone 11 for $299 and walk out the door without signing anything.

Considering these phones cost over $1000 (more like $1600 for the storage I'd use) - I would want the phone to last beyond 5 years. I did pay a little over $1000 for my iPhone 7 Plus in 2017 - but, I'm also going on my 8th year of use with my iPhone 7 Plus.
