Sukothai is one of the world's most important religious sites, consisting largely of Wats (eight or ten of them) which, while mainly in ruins, are nonetheless places deserving of respect. Any person of worth would go there with clothing appropriate to a temple, not to mention the sun is positively relentless there. Wear temple clothes out of respect and to keep the sun off you, or a third of the way into the place, you will be burned, and deservedly so!
