Local and state agencies are urging the public to be cautious as the Charlotte area prepares for likely snow and ice. The National Weather Service said Thursday Mecklenburg County could see up to 1.5 inches of snow in some areas Friday as well as sleet and freezing rain.

Charlotte has a 100% chance of snow, sleet and freezing rain from the approaching system, National Weather Service forecasters said.

Snow began to fall in the Charlotte metro area shortly before 3 p.m., sparking excitement and wonder among kids and adults alike. Forecasters are expecting areas north of uptown Charlotte to see the highest snowfall amounts.

It should start as snow in Charlotte before at some point changing to sleet and freezing rain. There is still some uncertainty when it comes to exactly how much snow we will see here in Charlotte. All snow is expected farther northwest with up to 6 inches possible in the mountains.

The snow drought is officially over as snow, sleet, and freezing rain made its way across the Charlotte area on Friday.

CHARLOTTE — The weather is calm, but the ripple effects of Friday’s winter storm are continuing at the airport today. Just before 11 a.m., Channel 9 tracked more than 140 delays and over 200 cancellations at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Charlotte has a 90% chance of snow, sleet and freezing rain from the approaching system, National Weather Service meteorologists said.

North Carolinians should pay close attention to their local weather forecast, make sure they are prepared with what they need at home before Friday afternoon, and stay home if possible as ice on the roadways will likely create dangerous driving conditions.
