Louisiana’s GOP-dominated legislature passed tax cuts on personal and corporate income on Friday in exchange for a statewide sales tax increase, a mixed bag of success for Gov.

The Louisiana Legislature Friday approved the centerpiece of Gov. Jeff Landry’s tax package, a measure that will cut individual income taxes and offset most of the lost revenue by raising sales taxes. The Senate vote was 38-1, with only Sen. Royce Duplessis, D-New Orleans, voting no.

The Louisiana Legislature has passed a slew of bills to restructure the state’s tax system. The key changes are cuts to the individual and corporate income tax, a raise in the state sales tax among cuts to corporate income and eliminating the franchise tax.

Income taxes will drop, sales taxes will rise and a much-maligned tax on corporate assets will disappear under legislation approved by the state Legislature Friday that ends two weeks of debate on how best to refashion Louisiana’s tax system.
