Resolute Mining Ltd. said Chief Executive Officer Terry Holohan and two other employees have been released from detention in Mali, just days after the gold mining company agreed to pay about $160 million to resolve a tax dispute with the government.

The miner said its chief executive and two employees have been released from detention in Mali, ending a standoff that raised concerns about a resurgence in resource nationalism as gold prices hover near record highs.

In a statement, the mining company confirmed "all three employees are safe and well and have departed the country".

The company has paid $80m (A$122.97m) to the government from cash reserves, with another $80m over the coming months.

Mali, ruled by a military junta allied with Russia, last year adopted new mining rules designed to allow the government a greater share in its mineral riches; it also has been seeking more money from Barrick Gold, which paid officials $85M last month in ongoing negotiations.
