Alyssa Thomas scored 12 of her career-high 29 points in the fourth quarter and the Phoenix Mercury closed on a 19-4 run to beat the Minnesota Lynx 79-71 on Wednesday.
Thomas and Whitcomb played a major role on defense, limiting Wings rookie Paige Bueckers, who had averaged 29 points against the Mercury in the previous two meetings. Given Bueckers’ history against the Mercury, Thomas specifically asked for the assignment of defending her before being moved off because of foul trouble.
It was a back-and-forth affair all afternoon. The Lynx led by four after the first quarter, but the Mercury took a three-point lead into halftime. Minnesota then led by five after a strong third quarter, only to be outscored by 13 in the fourth.

Whitcomb’s 29 were the most points scored by a WNBA player in any half this season.
The Phoenix Mercury have had great seasons, but they have also had some rough ones. Their 2023 season is a prime example.
Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally is "day-to-day" with an ankle injury, according to head coach Nate Tibbetts. Sabally's status is unknown for the home game on Monday, July 7, against the Dallas Wings.
