Autonomous vehicle outfit Cruise is slowly returning to operation in California following an incident in which a pedestrian was struck and dragged by a robotaxi for approximately 20 feet in October 2023.

Cruise, the self-driving vehicle unit of General Motors Co., plans to resume driving robotaxis in California this fall for the first time since a pedestrian accident led to its license being suspended in October.

The company said Thursday that it will put "several" vehicles driven by humans in the two cities that will initially perform mapping.

Don’t be surprised if you encounter a Cruise vehicle in the South Bay in coming months. The autonomous vehicle company — which suspended its local operations after one of its cars hit and dragged a woman in San Francisco 20 feet last October — announced Thursday it plans to put up to five cars on the road in Mountain View and Sunnyvale this fall.
