A Rockville Centre police detective faces hate crime charges following an incident in Manorville, prosecutors said Wednesday. According to authorities, on Nov. 3 around 7 p.m.  said John Murphy, 40, approached a cellular company subcontractor who was working at the the corner of Sylvan Court and Weeks Avenue.

The victim here was just trying to do his job, when the defendant allegedly harassed him and damaged his vehicle.”

Rockville Centre police Det. John Murphy is charged with a hate crime after authorities said he harassed a cellular service worker, using a racial slur. NewsdayTV's Virginia Huie reports.

I feared for my life,” Derick Anhwere, 45, of the Bronx, said of the clash with Rockville Centre Det. John Murphy. “He was unhinged.”

John Murphy, 40, of Manorville, who is a Rockville Centre Police Department detective, was later arrested and charged with criminal mischief as a hate crime and aggravated harassment. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney released the following statement:

Suffolk County Police arrested a Manorville man on Nov. 13 for harassing and intentionally damaging a man’s vehicle in Manorville due to the man’s race.

A Rockville Centre Police Department detective was arrested for allegedly harassing and intentionally damaging a man’s vehicle because the man was Black.

A Long Island detective with the Rockville Centre Police Department was arrested and charged with a hate crime on Wednesday for allegedly using racial slur against a Black cellphone technician and damaging his SUV earlier this month.
