Set during the Utah War of 1857, Peter Berg's limited series lays out a world where love conquers little, indifference is the only path to survival, and wanting anything will only bring death that much faster.

"Yeah, I mean, we need it so much," Gilpin said, more sincerely. "We deserve it, as the viewers, to have one moment of romance and joy in this crazy world."

Not just any star, Kitsch is also celebrated for his portrayal of Tim Riggins in NBC's Friday Night Lights, where he shared the screen with Minka Kelly. The drama off-screen is just as palpable, with Kelly revealing in her tell-all book Tell Me Everything their connection was far from perfect.

Creator Mark L. Smith's six-episode examination of scruffy, vicious people traversing the Utah Territory in 1857 also stars Taylor Kitsch and Dane DeHaan.

Taylor Kitsch told UPI he wanted to play Isaac in "American Primeval" because the character is a broken man who rediscovers his humanity and finds a new sense of purpose.
