Tropical storm warnings have been extended up to Surf City, North Carolina, as Tropical Storm Chantal is offshore from the southeastern U.S. on Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center.The storm has maximum sustained winds of up to 50 mph and is moving north at just 8 mph.

A tropical storm watch stretches along the coast from Edisto Beach, S.C., to the South Santee River. The hurricane center said those elsewhere along the southeast coast of the United States should also keep an eye on Chantal. Chantal is expected to track slowly to the north and then northwest and move onshore in South Carolina by Sunday morning.

Rains from the outer bands of Tropical Storm Chantal could dump as far west from the coast as Charlotte, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Saturday. “Shower chances increase after daybreak Sunday,” NWS meteorologist Chris Horne said about the Charlotte area.
