An estimated 40,000 people attended the annual bonfire event in Lewes to mark Guy Fawkes Night. The different bonfire societies marched with huge effigies and holding burning torches along the East Sussex town's crowded streets on Tuesday.

Lewes Bonfire Night is one of the most famous in the UK. Attracting thousands of people every year, the tradition sees effigies of contraversial politicians and celebrities paraded through the narrow streets of the East Sussex town before being burned in front of crowds of spectators.

Crowds of people lined the streets of Lewes as the town’s bonfire societies marched with burning torches for Guy Fawkes Night. Tens of thousands of people were expected to turn out for the annual celebrations, a tradition still very much alive since the first recorded event in 1795.

Thousands of people are set to attend the annual bonfire event in Lewes this evening. Six different bonfire societies are holding processions through the East Sussex town and spectators will watch as huge effigies are paraded through the streets.
