MPs who voted in favour of the assisted dying bill have raised concerns about parts of it and want to see changes before giving it final approval. Some are worried about the bill's provisions to allow doctors to raise assisted dying as an option without the terminally ill patient having asked for it first.

There was also a Bill proposed in the House of Lords during the 2021/2022 session which reached a second reading in the chamber, while Westminster Hall debates on assisted dying took place in July 2022 and April 2024.

As Parliament debated the merits of enabling sociopaths to coerce the vulnerable into a premature death, a peculiar little row broke out. The Tory MP Danny Kruger – who opposes the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill – had just uttered the words “assisted suicide”.

What is more, the principle of assisted dying has already been established. The courts have ruled that doctors can withdraw life support from patients in a vegetative state. And Britons are free to travel to Switzerland for an assisted death. Between 2016 and 2022, about 400 people did so.

At least 36 MPs who voted in favour of assisted dying have indicated that they could change their minds at a later stage, new analysis suggests.
