As the holiday season brings an influx of deliveries, Mentor police is set to deploy their undercover 'Porch Pirate' detail, which was launched in 2020.

Nearly half of shoppers can expect to have at least one delivery fall victim to porch pirates during the holiday season.

Safewise.com recently released its annual package theft report which found porch pirates cost Americans nearly $16 billion dollars in 2023. Out of more than 300 metro areas in the U.S., Dallas-Forth Worth ranked the eighth worst for package thefts.

Porch piracy continues to be an issue with thieves nabbing billions of dollars worth of packages just last year. SafeWise estimated that 260,000 incidents of package theft occurs daily.

More than 120 million packages were stolen in the U.S. in the past year, with an estimated $16 billion lost to porch pirates.

Retailers are warning Americans to be vigilant about their packages and not let porch pirates steal the holiday spirit,

Unfortunately, it also means it's prime season for porch pirates who are looking for packages to steal. Shawn McDermott said social media pages in his Museum District neighborhood are flooded with videos showing package thieves in action.
