The team announced that general manager Ron Hextall and president of hockey operations Brian Burke have been fired. The team also fired assistant general manager Chris Pryor.

Hextall, while spending part of his childhood in Pittsburgh, used to play street hockey with Rutherford. Hextall spoke glowingly of Rutherford, and the Hall of Fame general manager returned the favor.
