Holiday travel for the busiest week of the year is already well underway and could break records in central Indiana and beyond. A record 80 million Americans are expected to hit the road or fly more than 50 miles between Tuesday and the Monday after Thanksgiving,

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– AAA has some tips for last minute Thanksgiving travelers. If you have not hit the road yet, it’s best to avoid afternoon traffic, you could head out Thanksgiving morning when traffic might be lighter.

Morgan Dean, AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson, said if you plan to go out dinner or to a party, prepare ahead of time for how you are going to get home safely.

Beginning on Wednesday, The Auto Club Group will also launch its free ‘Tow to Go’ service, which is aimed at preventing impaired driving.

In order to avoid any of these consequences, AAA’s Mark Jenkins is advising Floridians to find a designated sober driver this weekend, or to call AAA’s Tow to Go. When you call Tow to Go, AAA deploys a tow truck to pick you and your car up and drop you both off at a safe point within a 10-mile radius of the initial call.

More than 71.7 million Americans will travel by car this year for the holiday. AAA said that's partly because gas prices are lower this Thanksgiving compared to last. That's an additional 1.3 million travelers on the road compared to last year.
