Authorities in northern Ohio announced they have recovered the body of a 5-year-old from the Sandusky River, raising to the death toll to three family members killed when they were struck by a train over the weekend.

A train in Ohio struck multiple pedestrians, killing three members of a family and hospitalizing an infant, officials said.

Officials say two adults were killed and an infant was injured after being struck by a Norfolk Southern train on the Miles Newton Bridge in Fremont.

FREMONT, Ohio ( WJW) – It started as a normal walk on a bike trail Sunday night for 15-year-old Tyson Kieffer of Fremont, Ohio. “We just got to the end right by the bridge, and that’s when we saw the families yelling to the ones still on the bridge,” said Kieffer.

“I saw a little purple jacket and thought, that’s a baby. And that just shook me, and I went and got the baby. You could see her go under and go back up. And when I got to her, she was leaning back and that scared me. I got her up, and I could tell she was breathing,” said Kieffer. The one-year-old girl was the only survivor.

The fishing community in Fremont is still trying to come to terms with the tragedy that unfolded Sunday night. Some of them even witnessed the child’s body being recovered from the water Monday morning.
