This season, Moeller star junior quarterback Matt Ponatoski hopes to join the club. Ponatoski would be the fourth Cincinnati-area athlete in the past six seasons to win the award after the Queen City and its surrounding areas were shut out from 1993 to 2018.

The winner will be announced on Dec. 5 at the Division II state championship game at Canton's Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

The most recent Northeast Ohio player to be named Mr. Football was Archbishop Hoban running back Lamar Sperling in 2022. Fifteen different area teens have received the honor over the last 37 years, including Euclid's Robert Smith and North Canton Hoover's Erick Howard twice each.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Moeller junior quarterback Matt Ponatoski was named Wednesday morning as an Ohio Mr. Football finalist by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association. Ponatoski, Moeller’s all-time career passing yards leader, is one of eight finalists for the Mr. Football award, which has been which has been presented on an annual basis since 1987.
