The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth suspended its program that used unclaimed bodies for medical research.

Tarrant County commissioners voted to end a contract with the University of North Texas Health Science Center “as fast as humanly possible” after NBC News reported that the Fort Worth graduate school had used hundreds of unclaimed bodies for research and sale around the country.

A NBC News report has prompted outcry from researchers and county leaders, including the county’s former longtime medical examiner.

The county has formally ended its partnership with the science center when it comes to unclaimed deceased individuals whose bodies are donated for research. The program abruptly shut down over concerns about how it was handled.
