KALAMAZOO, MI — An Amtrak train struck and killed a pedestrian near downtown Kalamazoo on Saturday, Nov. 23. The crash occurred near W. Main Street and the Elm Crossover at 12:31 p.m., said Zach Hamelton, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety public information officer. No one on the train was injured, Hamelton said.

Police said the person has not been identified, but a preliminary investigation suggests the individual didn’t realize the train was getting close.

Amtrak officials reported that a person was walking on the tracks between Front Street and Powder Mill Road at about 1:20 p.m. when the southbound train struck the person from behind.
