A powerful winter storm brewing near the Pacific Northwest known as a bomb cyclone is dragging an atmospheric river.

The Bay Area and Northern California awoke Wednesday to the arrival of a storm fueled by a strong atmospheric river and intensified by a so-called "bomb cyclone" off the Pacific Northwest coast.

Heavy, wet snow was expected to continue in the Cascades and the northern Sierra Nevada. Forecasters warned of blizzard and whiteout conditions and near-impossible travel at pass level due to accumulation rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour and wind gusts of up to 65 mph.

The Weather Prediction Center issued excessive rainfall risks beginning Tuesday and lasting through Friday as the strongest atmospheric river — long plumes of moisture stretching far over the Pacific Ocean — that California and the Pacific Northwest has seen this season bears down on the region.
