Fethullah Gulen, who built a powerful Islamic movement in Turkey and beyond but spent his later years mired in accusations of orchestrating an attempted coup, has died.

Fethullah Gülen, a reclusive U.S.-based Islamic cleric who inspired a global social movement while facing accusations he masterminded a failed 2016 coup in his native Turkey, has died.

Fethullah Gulen, a former ally of Turkish President Erdogan who became his archenemy, died Sunday. Gulen, who had been living in US exile since 1999, was accused by Ankara of being the mastermind of a failed 2016 coup.
