The heart of medieval Genoa – bounded by ancient city gates Porta dei Vacca and Porta Soprana, and the streets of Via Cairoli, Via Garibaldi and Via XXV Aprile – is famed for its caruggi (narrow lanes).

The historic center of Genoa is the core of the old town organized in the maze of alleys (caruggi) of medieval origin that runs - from east to west - from the hill of Carignano (Genoa) to the Genova Piazza Principe railway station, close to what was once the Palazzo del Principe, residence of Admiral Andrea Doria.

The city of Genoa, in north-west Italy, is an active commercial port and the busiest city in Liguria. It has a very interesting historic centre with numerous palaces, religious monuments and artworks to see and a substantial old town - it is said that Genoa has the largest medieval centre in Europe!
