Place a dirt/grass block over the top with a piston facing towards it. Activate the piston and the dirt block should occupy the same space as the dirt (edit: minecart).

My actual preferred method is to use a bed to directly convert from path blocks to dirt blocks, because it covers two blocks at a time and it breaks quickly without needing a tool.
