This guide follows the lazily meandering river from Cloverdale in northeast Sonoma County, heading southwest through the Alexander, Dry Creek, and Russian River valleys, to where the Russian River empties into the Pacific Ocean on the coast.

The Russian River is 110 miles long with headwaters North of Ukiah, near Willits, that flow southward to Forestville where it runs West and empties into the Pacific at Jenner, entirely on the ancestral and unceded lands of the Pomo, Miwok and Wappo Native American tribes.

Elevations range from sea level at the estuary near Jenner to 4,343 feet at the summit of Mt. St. Helena in the Maacama Mountains. The principal tributaries from the headwaters downstream are the East Fork Russian River, and Feliz, Pieta, Big Sulfur, Dry, Mark West (including the Laguna de Santa Rosa), Green Valley, and Austin creeks.
