Greasy pig disease is caused by Staphylococcus hyicus, a skin bacterium which produces an exfoliative toxin which causes loss of skin cells. 6 serotypes and a large number of phage types of the organism exist.Other staphylococci (S. sciuri, S. chromogenes and S. aureus) producing one or more of the exfoliative toxins have also been identified in a few cases.

Hypoglycaemia treatments can also be useful for neonatal piglets with hypothermia. Affected animals should be given intraperitoneal injections of 15 ml of 5% glucose solution every 4-6 hours or oral glucose by stomach tube and kept at a minimum of 30-35°C (85-95°F).

Porcine Stress Syndrome (PSS) - Pig Progress
Pigs which have died from PSS are usually in good condition and develop rigor mortis rapidly. There is some oedema and collapse of the lung. Pale, soft exudative muscle (PSE) develops in 60-70% of affected pigs within 15 minutes of death and appears as pale areas contrasting with the deeper red unaffected muscle when the longissiimus dorsi (back) or ham muscles are cut.
Erysipelas - Pig Progress
Swine erysipelas is caused by the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and its very close relative, E. tonsillarum.They are slender rod-shaped bacteria and form delicate colonies after 24-48 hours in culture. The two species cannot be distinguished easily in culture, but the antibodies to which they give rise demonstrate the existence of at least 28 serotypes of the two organisms.
