Not doing this will result in a mess that will fail in a year or less, depending on the soil and amount of rain. Making it thicker then 2 inches wont make up for not having a proper sub base.

Jul 26, 2007 · 1. You have a sand base and then I'm assuming it was not water compacted before gravel was put on it. 2. Putting gravel on a porous surface requires compacting - because gravel wants to press down into sand. If you have not compacted - driving on it will pressure some areas and not others - hence potholes.

The base is compacted clay with a typical gravel driveway - 3-4 inch base with a few inches of smaller stone on that with a final "crushed stone with dust" as the final layer.

May 19, 2010 · Both pictures look pretty good, but if these milling came off of driveways then you can expect more trash, dirt, base etc in the material. Driveways are typically much thinner then a road (driveway=0.75-1.5"; road=1.5"-4+"), and when you mill a drive you will get into the base material, and that ends up in the millings.

Apr 6, 2007 · Just used millings fro base in a 200' x 75' equipment shed. I have also used them for base in a open equipment lot. I have never had a tar problem. Usually be use crush and run but the millings were almost free when the town re-paved some roads. Millings are by far the better product in the long run.

Feb 21, 2008 · If using recycled asphalt, order double grind or regrind. Straight off the milling machine, it gets kinda chunky. Have it tail gated at a spread rate of 4-6". Then add a hot coat of emulsifier, roll and enjoy. Just thoroughly wetting the material with water prior to rolling will give decent results too.
